Phonak is the most searched hearing aid brand in the world, and for good reason. They’ve been making hearing aids since 1947, they’re consistently at or near the top of independent performance testing, and their current flagship, the Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere, ranked #1 for speech in noise in HearAdvisor’s independent prescription hearing aid testing.

Who Is Phonak: A Brief Background

Phonak was founded in Zurich, Switzerland in 1947 and is now part of Sonova Group, the world’s second-largest hearing aid manufacturer. Sonova also owns Unitron and previously owned Sennheiser’s consumer hearing division (which we cover in our Sennheiser review). In my early years as an audiologist in the 1990s, Phonak was the preferred fitting brand in many clinics, partly due to reputation, partly ease of fitting, and if I’m being completely honest, partly the tootsie rolls that came with their products. A lot has changed since then. Phonak has remained at the top of the market not through tradition but through genuine technology leadership, particularly in Bluetooth connectivity and, most recently, AI-powered speech processing.

The DEEPSONIC Chip, What Makes Phonak’s Current Flagship Actually Different

Most hearing aid marketing claims artificial intelligence. Phonak’s Audéo Infinio Sphere is one of the few where the AI claim is backed by a genuinely distinct hardware architecture, and it’s worth understanding why.

Standard hearing aids, including every previous Phonak model, use a single processor that handles everything: sound amplification, noise reduction, Bluetooth connectivity, program management, and any AI processing. This means AI capabilities are constrained by how much processing power is left over after everything else.

The Infinio Sphere uses two chips: the ERA chip handles standard hearing aid functions, AutoSense OS, connectivity, amplification, program management. The DEEPSONIC chip is a dedicated AI processor with one job: separating speech from background noise in real time. With 53 times more processing power than previous Phonak models and 7.7 billion operations per second, it doesn’t share resources with anything else.

The DEEPSONIC chip was trained on 22 million real-world sound samples. When activated, either automatically through AutoSense or manually, it runs Spheric Speech Clarity, which separates individual voices from background noise from any direction simultaneously. Independent testing by HearAdvisor gave the original Sphere Infinio the top tuned-fit scores for both speech in quiet (4.8/5) and speech in noise (4.6/5) of any prescription hearing aid they had tested.

The Ultra firmware update (October 2025) improved battery efficiency by 30%, addressing the original Sphere’s most significant limitation, and upgraded AutoSense to version 7.0, trained on 18 times more real-world scenarios. Available in two technology levels: I90 (premium) and I70 (advanced). Both have the DEEPSONIC chip; the technology level difference affects AutoSense environment detection sophistication, not the core speech-in-noise performance.

The honest limitation: battery life with continuous AI active is still approximately 10 hours. Most users won’t run Spheric mode continuously, and the Ultra update makes real-world battery significantly more practical. But heavy users in consistently noisy environments should be aware.

Audéo Infinio: The Standard Platform (Without DEEPSONIC)

The Audéo Infinio is the non-Sphere version, still powered by the ERA chip and AutoSense OS 7.0, but without the dedicated DEEPSONIC AI processor. It’s a strong performer in most listening environments and is smaller, lighter, and offers better battery life than the Sphere.

Available in four technology levels: I90, I70, I50, and I30. Technology level primarily affects AutoSense sophistication and feature richness; higher levels provide more refined automatic adaptation in complex environments.

• Battery: Up to 31 hours (standard) – significantly better than Sphere under AI load
• Bluetooth: Same universal connectivity as Sphere – iOS and Android, hands-free calling
• AutoSense OS 7.0: Same platform as Sphere for standard environments
• Best for: Patients who spend most of their time in moderate listening environments -home, one-on-one conversations, quieter workplaces – and want excellent sound without the Sphere’s size and cost premium

Our honest guidance: if your biggest challenge is noisy restaurants, family gatherings, and busy meetings, the Sphere’s DEEPSONIC chip is worth the investment. If your life is primarily quieter environments with occasional challenging situations, the standard Infinio will serve you excellently at a lower price point.

Virto R Infinio: The Custom In-the-Ear Option

The Virto R Infinio is Phonak’s fully rechargeable custom in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aid, for patients who want a discreet device that fits inside the ear rather than sitting behind it. Unlike most CIC hearing aids which can’t support Bluetooth due to size, the Virto R Infinio includes full Bluetooth connectivity.

• Style: Custom ITE – molded to your ear canal for a personalized fit
• Battery: Up to 30 hours – full charge in 3 hours
• Bluetooth: Universal – iOS and Android via Bluetooth Classic
• AutoSense OS 7.0: Same platform as the Infinio RIC
• Charging: Magnetic Snap-and-Charge system – designed for ease of daily use
• Best for: Patients who prioritize discretion and want a fully rechargeable custom ITE with Bluetooth

Important consideration: custom ITE devices require ear impressions and a longer fitting process than standard RIC hearing aids. They also limit some accessories (certain Roger microphones require behind-ear placement). The Virto R Infinio does not include the DEEPSONIC chip, it uses the ERA chip only. 

Audéo Lumity: Previous Generation (Still Available)

The Lumity was Phonak’s flagship before the Infinio platform launched in 2024. It remains an excellent hearing aid, particularly available through our consignment program at significantly reduced pricing, and uses Phonak’s proven AutoSense OS 5.0 platform with SmartSpeech technology for improved speech understanding.

For buyers who want Phonak quality at a meaningful discount, Lumity consignment units are worth considering. Current consignment units have warranties through 2026-2027.

Phonak vs. Costco Kirkland Signature: The Honest Comparison

One of the most common questions we get from Phonak shoppers is about Costco’s Kirkland Signature hearing aids. It’s a fair question worth answering directly.

The Kirkland Signature 10.0 is built on the Phonak Lumity platform, the same underlying technology as Phonak’s previous-generation flagship. This is publicly documented and not a secret. Costco sells a Phonak-platform device at a significantly lower price than prescription Phonak devices sold through audiology clinics.

What Costco’s price doesn’t include: professional fitting follow-ups, the level of audiologist oversight that produces optimal outcomes (Aural Rehabilitation), and ongoing follow-up care with a provider who knows your hearing history. The hardware is real. The fitting context is different.

Here is what we know from clinical experience: a Kirkland Signature hearing aid properly fitted by a skilled Costco hearing professional can produce good outcomes for many patients. It is not a scam or inferior hardware. What varies is the fitting quality, the follow-up availability, and most importantly, the ability to return if things aren’t working and have someone who has the time and incentive to genuinely troubleshoot.

We frequently see patients who purchased at Costco and come to us for help when their devices aren’t performing as expected. We can often help, but the service is private pay at that point, and the devices may not be programmable in our software if they’re Costco-exclusive firmware.

Our guidance: if you’re considering Costco, factor in the full cost of care over the life of the device, not just the purchase price. Every major hearing aid brand now supports Bluetooth. But not all Bluetooth implementations are equal, and Phonak’s approach is genuinely distinctive.
