LINNER Hearing Aids Review: Mercury, Nova Lite & Mars. Which Is Right for You?

If you’re looking for an affordable over-the-counter hearing aid without paying $500 or more to get started, LINNER is one of the more accessible brands in the OTC market. Their devices are designed to make hearing aids accessible to first-time buyers who want real hearing-aid features at a budget-friendly price point.

At Hears Hearing & Hearables, we tested LINNER devices in our clinic before deciding to carry them. We selected our current lineup, which includes the Mercury, Nova Lite, and Mars, because they met our standards and offer meaningfully different options for different users. This review covers what each model does well, where the tradeoffs are, and which one is most likely to fit your needs.

Not sure whether OTC is right for you at all? Our guide on how to choose an OTC hearing aid walks through the key factors before you commit to any brand.

What Is LINNER and Who Are Their Hearing Aids For?

LINNER’s mission is straightforward: make OTC hearing aids accessible without sacrificing quality. Their lineup is positioned at the budget-to-mid-range end of the OTC market, offering lower price points, but with some important tradeoffs.

The most important thing to understand upfront: LINNER OTC hearing aids are best suited for specific listening situations, quieter conversations, TV watching, events, rather than continuous all-day wear across all environments. If you need a device that performs reliably from morning to night in complex settings like work meetings, restaurants, and phone calls, a prescription hearing aid may serve you better in the long run

Features All LINNER Models Share

Across the Mercury, Nova Lite, and Mars, LINNER builds on a consistent foundation:

  • Rechargeable batteries with a charging case and all models are compatible with Qi wireless charging
  • Water and sweat resistance; suitable for everyday use and light exercise
  • FDA-registered medical devices; true hearing aids, not unregulated amplifiers
  • HSA/FSA eligible; purchasable with Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account funds, which can meaningfully reduce out-of-pocket costs

LINNER Mercury: The Simple, App-Free Option

The Mercury is a receiver-in-canal (RIC) style hearing aid with push-button controls and no app or Bluetooth requirement. It’s a receiver-in-the-canal design where the hearing aid sits behind the ear, with a small receiver that fits in the ear canal.  This allows it to be one of the more comfortable fits in the LINNER lineup for all-day wear.

In our clinic testing, we found the sound quality to be fair for the price point, believing it to be a solid entry-level option that delivers on its core promise: put them in, press the button, hear better.

Mercury At a Glance

  • Style: Receiver-in-canal (RIC); behind-the-ear body with in-canal receiver
  • Controls: Push-button; no smartphone or app required
  • Bluetooth: None
  • Charging: Rechargeable with a Qi-compatible wireless charging case
  • Best for: First-time users who want simple hearing enhancement without any app or technology learning curve

The tradeoff is limited customization; what you get out of the box is largely what you get. Users who want to fine-tune their sound profile or stream audio should look at the Nova Lite or Mars instead.

LINNER Nova Lite: The Connected Option for Everyday Use

The Nova Lite is LINNER’s current flagship OTC model, offering Bluetooth connectivity to any smartphone (iOS or Android), app-based customization via the LINNER HA app, and an updated IPX5 water resistance rating. In our clinic testing, we found the sound quality and amplification to be good for the price point.

It’s a compact earbud-style design that normalizes naturally, and it looks like something millions of people already wear, which can ease the self-consciousness many first-time hearing aid users feel.

Nova Lite At a Glance

  • Style: Compact earbud design
  • Bluetooth: Yes, connects to any smartphone (iOS and Android)
  • App control: Yes, LINNER HA app for personalized adjustments and sound mode changes
  • Water resistance: IPX5, better protection than the basic IP4X rating
  • Charging: Rechargeable with a Qi-compatible wireless charging case
  • Best for: Users who want Bluetooth streaming, app control, and a modern earbud-style design

One limitation to note from our testing: the ear tips included can be occluding for some users, and there are no smaller tip sizes for those with smaller ear canals. The occlusion effect is a sensation of hearing your own voice through a microphone, especially initially. It typically fades as your brain adjusts. You can read more about this on our blog

LINNER Mars: The Advanced Earbud Option (Limited Availability)

AVAILABILITY NOTE: The LINNER Mars is currently available as an open-box demo unit only from us— it was used in our clinic and is in perfect condition, but is non-refundable once shipped. Product page: hearshearingandhearables.com/product/open-box-linner-mars-otc-hearing-aids/

The Mars is the most technically advanced device in the LINNER lineup and the only LINNER model with beamforming dual microphones. These directional microphones use 16 digital channels to focus on speech in front of you while reducing surrounding noise, which is a meaningful step up for users who struggle most in group settings or noisy environments.

Mars At a Glance

  • Style: In-the-ear earbud design with a locking mechanism for secure fit
  • Bluetooth: Yes, connects to any smartphone (iOS and Android)
  • App control: Yes, LINNER HA app with sound mode adjustments for different environments
  • Unique feature: Beamforming dual microphones with 16 digital channels– the only LINNER model with this capability
  • Battery: Up to 8 hours per charge; charges in the case via Qi wireless or USB-C fast charging
  • Water resistance: IPX5
  • Best for: Users who want the most advanced LINNER technology, particularly for speech clarity in noisy settings

The same occlusion note applies here as with the Nova Lite, limited ear tip sizes may not fit all ear canals, and some users experience the own-voice effect initially.

Because the Mars is currently available only as an open-box demo unit, as of the date of this post, we recommend reaching out to confirm availability before purchasing.

LINNER Connect: The Remote Microphone and TV Streamer

The LINNER Connect works with any Bluetooth-enabled LINNER device (Nova Lite and Mars) in two modes: as a remote microphone you can clip to a companion’s clothing in a noisy restaurant, streaming their voice directly to your hearing aids; or as a TV streamer plugged into your television’s audio output for wireless audio delivery.

One important detail from the product listing: when the LINNER Connect is plugged into the TV, audio from the TV speakers is bypassed, only the wearer hears the audio through their hearing aids. Keep this in mind if you watch TV with others. The Connect has an effective range of up to 66 feet, 40ms low latency, and a rechargeable battery. For users whose biggest hearing challenges are group conversations or TV listening, this accessory meaningfully expands what these devices can do.

Our Honest Assessment: What LINNER Hearing Aids Don’t Do Well

We carry LINNER because we believe they deliver real value at their price point, however, transparent guidance is how we help you make the right choice, not just a purchase.

Best for Situational Use, Not All-Day Wear

LINNER devices perform well in specific listening situations. They are not designed to replace prescription hearing aids for continuous daily wear across all environments. If you need consistent, high-performing amplification from morning to night, a prescription device is a more appropriate investment.

Limited Ear Tip Sizes

Both the Nova Lite and Mars come with limited ear tip sizes and no smaller options for users with smaller ear canals. A poor-fitting ear tip creates both comfort issues and sound quality problems. We recommend trying the included sizes carefully and reaching out to us if you’re having trouble getting a good fit.

Occlusion Effect

The snug in-ear fit of the Nova Lite and Mars can cause some users to hear their own voice more loudly than usual a phenomenon called the occlusion effect. It’s common with in-ear devices and typically diminishes as your brain adjusts over the first few weeks.

Mars Availability Is Limited

The Mars is currently only available as an open-box demo unit and is non-refundable once shipped. If you’re specifically interested in the Mars for its dual beamforming microphones, contact us first to confirm availability.

Which LINNER Model Is Right for You?

  • Choose the Mercury if: you want simple, reliable hearing improvement without any app or smartphone involvement. Push a button, hear better, and that’s it.
  • Choose the Nova Lite if: you want Bluetooth streaming to your phone, app-based customization, and a modern earbud design. This is our primary recommendation for most LINNER shoppers.
  • Ask about the Mars if: speech clarity in noisy environments is your biggest challenge and you want the benefit of beamforming dual microphones. Contact us to confirm open-box availability first.
  • Add the LINNER Connect if: group conversations in noisy settings or TV listening is where you struggle most and it meaningfully extends what the Nova Lite and Mars can do.
  • Consider prescription instead if: you need reliable performance in all environments all day long, or if you’ve tried OTC devices before without satisfying results

Frequently Asked Questions: LINNER Hearing Aids

Are LINNER hearing aids FDA approved?

LINNER hearing aids are FDA registered medical devices, meeting the regulatory requirements for over the counter hearing aids in the United States. All models– Mercury, Nova Lite, and Mars are also eligible for purchase using HSA and FSA funds.

What is the difference between LINNER Mercury, Nova Lite, and Mars?

The Mercury is a receiver-in-canal device with push-button controls and no Bluetooth best for users who want simplicity with no app. The Nova Lite is a compact earbud-style device with Bluetooth to iOS and Android and LINNER HA app control our primary recommendation for most buyers. The Mars is the most advanced model with beamforming dual microphones and 16 digital channels for speech clarity in noise, currently available as open-box only.

What happened to the LINNER Nova? Is it the same as the Nova Lite?

The original LINNER Nova has been succeeded by the Nova Lite, which is the current active model in our store. The Nova Lite offers Bluetooth connectivity to both iOS and Android, LINNER HA app control, and an IPX5 water resistance rating.

Can LINNER hearing aids be worn all day?

LINNER OTC hearing aids are best suited for specific listening situations rather than continuous all-day wear. They work well for TV listening, quieter conversations, and events, but may not provide the consistent performance across all environments that prescription hearing aids offer.

What is the LINNER Connect and which models does it work with?

The LINNER Connect is an accessory that works with Bluetooth-enabled LINNER models (Nova Lite and Mars). It functions as a remote microphone. Clip it to a speaker’s clothing for clearer hearing in noisy settings and as a TV streamer for wireless audio. Note: when connected to the TV, the TV’s speakers are bypassed, so only the hearing aid wearer hears the audio.

Does LINNER Mars have better sound quality than the Nova Lite?

The Mars includes beamforming dual microphones with 16 digital channels, a feature not available on the Nova Lite or Mercury, which provides better speech clarity in noisy environments. For general listening situations, the Nova Lite performs well and is currently the easier model to purchase as it is in stock.
