In 2025, Eargo merged with Lexie Hearing under a new parent company called LXE Hearing, backed by $100 million in new funding from Patient Square Capital. The combined company continues to operate Eargo and Lexie as separate brands, Eargo focusing on in-the-ear solutions, Lexie on behind-the-ear. The new backing has stabilized the company after a period of financial difficulty in 2022-2023.

Their remote support model is genuinely good. Eargo employs licensed hearing professionals who provide phone and app-based consultation, onboarding, and ongoing support, one of the few OTC brands that has invested meaningfully in professional remote care. That’s worth acknowledging.

Eargo’s Current Lineup: Eargo 8, Eargo SE, and Link by Eargo

Eargo 8: The Flagship (~$2,699 per pair)

Eargo’s current flagship launched in May 2025. It’s a completely-in-canal (CIC) device with Smart Sound Adjust, an adaptive system that automatically classifies your listening environment and adjusts settings in real time. It includes a built-in Sound Match hearing screening that personalizes amplification to your hearing profile.

Released alongside the Link in January 2025, the SE is a more affordable version of the Eargo 8, with the same CIC design, same Flexi Palm tips, and same open-fit feel. It offers four preset programs and a Sound Match self-fitting option, but fewer adaptive features than the flagship.

The Link is Eargo’s earbud-style ITE model, the only Eargo device with Bluetooth streaming. It’s larger and more visible than the CIC models, positioned as an entry-level option for buyers who want Bluetooth connectivity alongside Eargo’s remote support.

What Eargo Does Well: A Fair Assessment

Where Eargo Falls Short: The Limitations That Matter

No Bluetooth Streaming on the Two Main Models

This is the most significant limitation for many buyers. The Eargo 8 and Eargo SE, Eargo’s primary product line, have no Bluetooth audio streaming. No music or calls through your hearing aids, and no TV streaming. This is a meaningful gap in 2025/2026, when Bluetooth has become a standard feature even on budget OTC devices.

The only Eargo model with Bluetooth is the Link, which is the most visible of the three designs, essentially an earbud. If invisibility is your reason for considering Eargo, but you also want Bluetooth, Eargo’s lineup presents a direct tradeoff that isn’t easy to resolve.

Eargo 8 Pricing vs. Competition

At $2,699 per pair, the Eargo 8 sits at the premium end of the OTC market, pricing that puts it squarely against devices that offer significantly more features, including full Bluetooth streaming and AI-powered sound processing with independent lab validation. We’ll show this comparison specifically below.

Eargo SE Has Lower Water Resistance

The Eargo SE is rated IP54, protection against splashing from any direction, but not submersion or powerful water jets. The Eargo 8 is IP68. For a device worn in your ear canal during active daily life, this difference matters, and at ~$1,699, the SE isn’t cheap enough to justify accepting lower durability.

No Independent HearAdvisor Lab Testing on SE

HearAdvisor has tested the Eargo 8 but not the Eargo SE. For buyers who rely on standardized independent lab scores to compare devices objectively, the SE is harder to evaluate. We prioritize independent lab validation in our product selection for exactly this reason.

Our Honest Take: Why We Chose Different Brands

Eargo makes a good product. The CIC design is genuinely comfortable and discreet, the remote support model is thoughtful, and the Eargo 8’s adaptive processing is real. If absolute invisibility is your top priority and Bluetooth doesn’t matter to you, Eargo is worth considering seriously.

But when we evaluated OTC devices for our store, Eargo didn’t make our selection, and the reasons are specific, not general:

• At ~$2,699 the Eargo 8 costs more than 4x the ELEHEAR Beyond Pro, which outperforms it in independent lab testing for speech in noise (2.40 points above OTC average vs Eargo’s above-average but lower score) and adds full Bluetooth streaming, tinnitus masking, and remote audiologist access.
• No Bluetooth on the CIC models is a meaningful gap: In 2025/2026 the expectation that a premium-priced OTC device streams calls and media is reasonable. Paying ~$2,699 for a device that can’t stream phone calls or music is difficult to justify when alternatives at a fraction of the price can.
• The Sennheiser All Day Clear offers comparable discretion at $949.95 — with full Bluetooth, AI scene detection, IP68 water resistance, and the option of our In-Clinic Care Package for professional setup.
• Independent lab validation matters to us: The ELEHEAR Beyond Pro’s #2 of 56 OTC devices ranking from HearAdvisor gives us objective confidence in recommending it. Eargo 8 received a B grade, solid, but not at the top of the category.

None of this means Eargo is a bad choice. It means that for most buyers, the value comparison doesn’t favor Eargo at its current price points, especially when Bluetooth streaming is a priority.

Who Should Still Consider Eargo

• Absolute invisibility is non-negotiable: If you genuinely cannot accept any behind-the-ear component and the Link’s earbud design doesn’t appeal, Eargo 8 is one of the most comfortable CIC options in the OTC market. • You don’t need Bluetooth: Some buyers genuinely don’t want to stream audio through their hearing aids; they just want to hear better. If that’s you and invisibility matters, Eargo SE at ~$1,699 is worth a look.
