Try Before You Buy: Every Way to Test Drive Hearing Aids Before You Commit

By Kim Fishman, Audiologist | Hears Hearing & Hearables, Hopkins, Minnesota

Here’s something I’ve said to patients for years: you cannot read your way to the right hearing aid. You can research features, compare specs, watch YouTube reviews, and read every article on the internet, and you’ll still not know how a hearing aid sounds in your ears or in your life, until you actually wear one.

That’s not a knock on research. It’s just the reality of hearing devices. Sound is personal. What feels natural and clear to one person feels tinny or overwhelming to another. The acoustic environment of your kitchen is different from your workplace, your car, and your favorite restaurant. No spec sheet captures that.

At Hears Hearing & Hearables, we’ve built our entire approach around this truth. We don’t pressure people toward a particular product. We help them find the right solution, and the path to that solution almost always involves some version of trying before committing. This post explains every option available to you, whether you can come to our Hopkins, Minnesota clinic or you’re shopping entirely from home.

Why “Try Before You Buy” Matters More for Hearing Aids Than Almost Anything Else

Hearing aids sit at an unusual intersection: they’re medical devices, they’re highly personal, and they’re expensive. The combination creates real risk for buyers who choose based on research alone.

Consider what you can’t know from reading:

  • How a device handles your specific kitchen noise, your specific TV, your specific family’s voices
  • Whether the fit is comfortable after four hours of continuous wear, not just in a fitting room
  • How does the app feel to use when you’re actually in a noisy restaurant, trying to adjust quickly
  • Whether the sound profile feels natural or processed to your specific ear
  • How the device performs on phone calls with the people you actually talk to

Every hearing loss, ear canal, and lifestyle is different. The only reliable test is real-world use, and that’s what every option in this guide is designed to give you.

Option 1: In-Clinic Demo at Our Hopkins Clinic

In our clinic, we offer a guided demo process where you can try different hearing aids, across different brands and technology levels for a trial period of up to a week. This is the most comprehensive way to find the right hearing aid because we control for as many variables as possible before you wear the device in your actual life.

Here’s what our in-clinic demo process looks like:

  • We start with questions, not products, your lifestyle, your biggest listening challenges, your phone, your budget, your priorities
  • Then, we conduct or review a current hearing assessment to confirm the right tier (OTC vs prescription) and the right technology level for your hearing profile
  • Afterwards, we fit you with demo devices from two or three different manufacturers or technology levels, letting you experience the differences firsthand
  • You wear the demo device in real-world conditions for up to a week, at home, at work, at dinner, wherever you need hearing support most
  • We follow up, discuss what worked and what didn’t, and use that feedback to narrow to the right device

Our patients consistently tell us they appreciate that nobody is pushing them toward a specific brand or model. We genuinely don’t have a stake in which device you choose, only in whether it works for your hearing. That’s a different experience from a lot of hearing aid shopping.

The in-clinic demo process is not free. There is a service fee that covers our time, the fitting, and the follow-up. It’s a worthwhile investment because it dramatically increases the likelihood that your first hearing aid purchase is also your right hearing aid purchase.

Option 2: Remote Guidance via Telehealth, For Those Who Can’t Visit In Person

Not everyone can get to Hopkins, Minnesota. Our telehealth service was built for exactly that situation, and while it’s not a physical demo, it provides the same guided decision-making process that makes our in-clinic demos valuable.

Here’s what a telehealth consultation can do for you before you buy:

  • Review your hearing history, recent audiogram (if you have one), and the listening situations where you struggle most
  • Walk you through the options in your budget and hearing range,  OTC vs prescription, which brands and models fit your profile
  • Help you narrow to one or two specific devices worth trying, rather than leaving you to choose from dozens
  • Guide you through the setup after purchase if you hit any friction points
  • Provide follow-up support to help you evaluate whether the device is working as expected

The telehealth path works best when combined with a generous return window, which is where OTC hearing aids have a real advantage over prescription devices for remote buyers. More on that below.

Option 3: Mail-a-Demo: Try a Real Hearing Aid at Home, Anywhere in the Country

Can’t make it to Hopkins but want more than just guidance before you buy? Our Telehealth Remote Demo program brings the clinic experience to you. We program a real hearing aid to your hearing profile and mail it directly to your door.

Start Your Online Demo Here →

Here’s how the process works:

  • Start with a telehealth consultation. This step comes first, it’s how we get to know your hearing history, your listening challenges, and what you’re hoping a hearing aid will do for your life. If you haven’t had a formal diagnostic hearing test, we can accept an online screening test to program the demo aids for you. (Note: an online screening test is not accepted by many states as a legal basis for a prescription hearing aid, but it’s sufficient to get you into a meaningful demo.)
  • Sign the demo agreement. Before we ship, you’ll sign our Demo Guidelines agreement so you understand the terms of the loan. What you’re receiving, the cost structure, and how to return the device.
  • Pay the demo fee. The demo is $50 per hearing aid pair for the first week. This covers programming the devices to your hearing profile and getting them out to you. The demo fee may or may not be credited toward a purchase.
  • Wear it in your real world. You’ll have approximately one week to try the device in your actual life. Take it to the grocery store, a restaurant, a family dinner, a work meeting. Everywhere you actually need help hearing. That’s where you’ll learn whether it’s right for you.
  • Want more time or a different model? If after the first week you’d like to continue with the same device or try a different model, we can extend the demo. Extended demos are $100 per aid per week, plus $50 per 30-minute appointment if additional programming is needed.
  • Ready to buy? Your 45-day trial begins at purchase. If you love what you’re hearing and want to move forward, we’ll walk you through the different brands, styles, and technology levels available to you and help you choose the right device. You will send back the demo devices so that we can send you the new pair of hearing aids of your choosing.

Have questions before you order? Reach out to our team and we’ll walk you through everything.

Option 4: The OTC 45-Day Return Window: Essentially a Real-Life Test Drive

This is the angle that doesn’t get nearly enough attention in hearing aid conversations: the OTC 45-day return window is, in practical terms, one of the best hearing-aid test-drive opportunities available, and it’s built into the purchase.

Minnesota state law guarantees a 45-day trial period for hearing aid purchases. At Hears Hearing & Hearables, we honor this on all applicable OTC products. You have 45 days to wear the device in your actual life before committing.

Think about what 45 days of real-world use tells you that a one-week clinic demo cannot:

  • How the device performs across seasons of social situations, not just one dinner out, but multiple events over six weeks
  • Whether the charging routine fits your life long-term, not just for a few days
  • How the app adjustments work when you’re on your own, not in a clinic with support
  • Whether the fit stays comfortable through a full workday, a long car trip, or a workout
  • How phone calls sound with the specific people you talk to most

Our recommendation for remote buyers: use a telehealth consultation to narrow to one or two strong candidates, order the most likely fit from our store, and use the 45-day window to evaluate it seriously. If it doesn’t work, return it. We’ll help you figure out what the issue was and what to try next.

Pro tip: Don’t evaluate a new hearing aid in your quietest room. Wear it to the grocery store, a restaurant, a family dinner, a work meeting– the environments where you actually need help. That’s where you’ll learn whether it’s right for you.

Note on return costs: restocking fees, credit card processing fees, and outbound shipping costs are typically not refunded. These are standard return processing costs, but the device cost itself is fully refundable within the window.

Option 5: Finding a Demo Provider Near You

If you’re not in Minnesota and want an in-person demo experience similar to what we offer at our Hopkins clinic, we can help you find a hearing care professional in your area who offers demo programs.

Not all providers offer demos, as it requires time, loaner devices, and a no-pressure approach that not every practice prioritizes. But those who do tend to be the kind of provider worth building a long-term relationship with. Reach out to our team and tell us your location, we’ll do our best to point you toward someone we’d trust.

Why We Talk About Solutions, Not Products

I want to close with something that underlies everything we do at Hears Hearing & Hearables, and something that makes our demo approach different from a lot of hearing aid shopping experiences.

There’s a meaningful difference between pushing a product and providing a solution. A product is a device. A solution is what actually improves how you experience your life.

When we sit with a patient, in the clinic or via telehealth, we’re not thinking about which device has the best margin or which manufacturer gave us the best deal. We’re thinking about what this specific person needs in their specific listening situations, with their specific hearing profile, at a price point that’s genuinely manageable for them. Sometimes that’s a premium prescription device. Sometimes it’s a well-chosen OTC hearing aid. And other times, it’s a consignment device that gives them access to premium technology at a fraction of the cost.

The demo process exists to serve that approach. It puts you in the driver’s seat, literally test-driving devices in your real life, rather than committing based on a clinic demonstration or a spec sheet. We think that’s the right way to do hearing care. And the patients who go through it with us almost always agree.

Ready to Start Your Hearing Aid Test Drive?

Whether you want to come into our Hopkins clinic, schedule a telehealth consultation, or start with an OTC device under the 45-day return window, we’re here to help you navigate the process.

No pressure. No hidden agenda. Just help finding what actually works for your hearing.

Frequently Asked Questions: Hearing Aid Demos and Trials

Can I try a hearing aid before buying?

Yes, in several ways. At our Hopkins, Minnesota clinic, we offer a guided in-clinic demo process where you can try different devices for up to a week before deciding. For OTC hearing aids, Minnesota law guarantees a 45-day trial period. You can return a device within 45 days if it doesn’t meet your needs. We also offer telehealth consultations to guide your decision remotely before you purchase.

Is a hearing aid demo free?

In-clinic demos at Hears Hearing & Hearables involve a service fee that covers the fitting, consultation, and follow-up appointment. The fee reflects the professional time involved in guiding you through the process. OTC hearing aids purchased through our store come with a 45-day return window; the device cost is fully refundable within that period, though restocking, processing, and shipping fees are not refunded.

How long can I try a hearing aid before deciding?

In-clinic demo periods at our clinic are typically up to one week. For OTC hearing aids purchased from our store, Minnesota law provides a 45-day trial period. We recommend using the full trial window and testing the device across as many real-world listening situations as possible before making a final decision.

What is the difference between a hearing aid demo and a trial period?

A demo typically involves a loaner device provided by the clinic for a set period, after which you return it and decide whether to purchase. Trial periods mean you purchase the device outright but retain the right to return it for a refund within a specified window. Both serve the same purpose, giving you real-world experience with the device before committing fully.

Can I get a hearing aid demo if I’m not near your Hopkins clinic?

Yes, in two ways. Our telehealth consultation service provides remote guidance to help you choose the right device before purchase, which you then evaluate using the OTC return window as your trial. We can also help you find a hearing care provider in your area who offers in-person demos. Contact us with your location, and we’ll do our best to point you toward someone we’d recommend.

What should I do during a hearing aid trial period?

Wear the device in the environments where you actually need hearing support, not just at home in a quiet room. Test it at restaurants, family gatherings, work meetings, on phone calls with the people you talk to most, and during any activities that are important to your daily life. The goal is to understand how it performs in your real world, not in ideal conditions. If something isn’t working as expected during the trial, reach out to our team, we can often help troubleshoot before you decide to return.
